I was a guest on this week's @FballFirstPod and I discussed a stat I found - the Rams have the worst Number 1 defense since the merger (and likely in NFL history). With 18.5 points allowed per game, it's the highest average for the top ranked scoring defense.
It's nearly a point per game higher than the last holder of that 'record' - the 2018 Chicago Bears. They gave up 17.7 points per game on average.
Here are the 10 Worst Best Defenses since 1970:

1. 2020 Rams - 18.5
2. 2018 Bears - 17.7
3. 2015 Seahawks - 17.3
4. 1998 Dolphins - 16.6
5. 2007 Colts - 16.4
6. 2014 Seahawks - 15.9
7. 1987 Colts - 15.9
8. 2017 Vikings - 15.8
9. 2004 Steelers - 15.7
10. 1983 Dolphins - 15.6
And finally, this is not to discredit the Rams. It's more an indication of how much offense dictates the game in the modern era. As you can see, the points allowed by the NFL's best defense has been rising steadily in recent years.
I'm sure this Rams 'record' will not last long.
