Tbh while islamically an age gap like this is permissible, we should be able to understand why many men specifically prefer young women who most likely haven’t finished (or even started) undergrad & why families have historically preferred them for their sons... https://twitter.com/that_boy_mohami/status/1348829846428921859
Regardless of your view of western college, it’s a fact that women w/o a degree are less financially mobile than those w one. It’s harder to leave a marriage we’re not happy in (esp abusive ones) not to mention-
younger women who haven’t yet been exposed to the “real world” are more impressionable than those who have... and college typically enables this kind of exposure and opportunity to self-actualize significantly more than helicopter families.
so yh it’s a bit weird when older men (who’ve already established themselves)& their families prefer a younger, more impressionable woman who just finished high school, hasn’t established herself, & likely has no recourse in the event of a fallout over one closer to their own age
Age isn’t the problem, it’s the reasons why men & their families have historically preferred one type of woman over another.
& using prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ marriage to Aisha as an example of “age doesn’t matter” is a false equivalency because Muhammad ﷺ never manipulated his wives or looked for impressionable women under the pretense of “I can have a preference”
Astaghfirullah you would even try to equate a man who said “the best of you are best to your wives” to men & families today who intentionally look for impressionable women under the guise of “age preference”. It’s preferred for a reason.
also my own parents were 11 yrs apart, so I don’t think age gaps are inherently bad, it’s how they’re used against women specifically that make us feel weird when we see it so normalized.
Tbh tho why would you not want an educated woman closer to your age? That’s the real q.
