There's a saying y'all know: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." I posit that our current state of affairs was aided & abetted by congress' abdication of its duties over the last 20+ years. It probably didn't start with giving Bush2 war powers, but that's 1/
likely the most egregious example. The office of the president has gained more and more power as congress has become less willing to take hard votes that might make them less "attractive" to donors and voters. This has been exacerbated by the out of control costs of running 2/
campaigns in the modern era. If we want to fix this we need to reform campaigning (and be creative about it), as well as holding our leaders' feet to the fire to actually LEAD. Then we need to put the framers' checks and balances back into use so that power is not concentrated /3
in the executive branch.
didn't start us down on this path; congress did.
is just the proof of what the framers were trying to prevent in their seemingly convoluted 3-part system of governance. It's up to us to insure we go back and learn from what they were trying /4

to teach us. We've been lucky that, for the most part, the people we've elected to be president have, for the most part, a moral compass.
is our lesson in what happens if they don't. 5/5 </soapbox>
