THREAD: This is is being missed. It needs to be top line. This report is a snapshot. It is not definitive. It didn’t even find the graves? What sort of investigation is that? It should have been handed over to the UN for a full human rights investigation and wasn’t. Our Taoiseach https://twitter.com/paulodonoghue93/status/1349112276687708163
...talks about the dangers of institutions. Report is an exercise in Institutional power in & of itself. Power being the government: they set the scope & delivery of this report. Our so-called minister for children breaks yet another promise to survivors by leaking it to press.
Then late with the speech. I have no doubt in the Taoiseach’s sincerity but the instinct of every institution is to protect itself. To limit the damage. Why did he omit the adoptions & reparation from this speech. Promise to deliver legislation by years end is an insult.
It’s not good enough. Imagine torturing women & children for 80 years & as a sorry you give them an enhanced medical card ( for ppl outside Ireland we do not have universal healthcare. He is promising those survivors........eh, healthcare), patient liaisons & counselling.
This is the absolute bare minimum they should receive. We have got to remember that this SAME government tried to seal these files only a few months ago. Roderic O’ Gorman was asked to do the Gov dirty work: make it go away... in only 9 sitting days. Yet they can’t make tracing
Legislation before the end of the year??They had a decade to plan this. This report only came about bc of the work of a local historian Catherine Corless. The Gov had been sitting on the Magdalen laundries findings before the international embarrassment that was 800 babies
In a mass grave in Tuam. This is all about political will. This same Gov tried to seal administrative files: evidence of their part, the state’s role in this. It is good that the Taoiseach today, owned this. “As main funding authority, the State had the power”. But the meta
narrative is women & children being collateral damage, fodder, for a deeply misogynistic society. It was a triad of society, state & church. No more buck-passing. This went on for 80 years & everyone applauded or looked the other way. Either way we were all complicit. There is a
Direct line from that time to what is happening now to Irish women & children under the new religion. Those who don’t submit, like us are shunned by the public sphere, outraged edicts are issued, livelihoods impacted. Even Senators in Ireland today proclaim “Terfs can eat coal”
And commentators & elite describe what happened to survivors as happening to “people with vaginas”. The new Woke Elites adding a new layer of dehumanising to their pain. We are all sewn up again. People want power so they say the magic words TWAW. People want an easy life so
They ignore the plight of the women in Limerick prison. This state, our “modern” our “progressive” State locks up TEN times the amount of women in jail than it did 20 years ago. 80% are Mothers of 3-4 children. A number are travellers and all are poor. Any of this sound familiar?
It should do. It is who went to #motherandbabyhomes except now we separate those mothers from their babies just like before & now we lock rapists in jail with them...before you congratulate yourself of how much we have changed, think about those women. #wewillbeheard
