ICYMI - province of NS takes $173 million in property tax from Halifax and uses to fund education, corrections, housing. HRM has no say over how it is spent, this is more than police, or transit, or roads. Or single department. #nspoli #halifax
Why does this matter? Over 2/3s of municipal revenue comes from property tax, and then about 25% of that evaporates and goes to the province. HRM few or no options for raising revenue other than property tax.
And municipalities across NS pay this, and because we are reasonable people, all we have asked from the province is that they freeze the amount they take, so the budget impact would be reduced over time. No dice, so far. #nspoli #halifax

And as my friend and fellow past pres of @nsfedmuni @stewart_geoff reminds us - NS take goes up, but NS Capacity Grant has been frozen for 7 years. HRM does not but CBRM and many others need this to meet their citizens needs. #nspoli #halifax https://twitter.com/stewart_geoff/status/1349369504246198278?s=20
