Happy Jan 13 to all in news/podcasting who think it's WILD that the @nytimes @samdolnick & @mikiebarb think their behavior surrounding Caliphate, Andy Mills, and disclosing major relationships within the org is mostly fine. /cont'd
This quote from the letter the @nytimes wrote in response to @PRPDorg is mind blowing to me. - my spouse is Barbaro's counterpart at another major news org and would be totally fired for not disclosing our relationship if he were doing any kind of story on my work. /2
It's weird that they're so anti-disclosure about this relationship all of a sudden. @mikiebarb and his team seem to love bragging about it normally: Here they are doing it in a subtle, low-key piece by @intelligencer /3
In this piece Barbro is called sometimes ruthless and it paints him as VERY into attention...This is how John Hockenberry used to act. This behavior is indicative of someone who is more concerned with protecting their own ego than doing good work for the benefit of others. /4
And here they are disclosing that relationship again, this time in an interview with @THR, Barbaro and his team literally brag about how his relationship with Tobin enhances the quality their work /5
It's weird that NOW they think it's unnecessary to disclose this relationship, especially when disclosing it would mean Barbaro would have to own up to using his status as the #1 pod host in the world to DM peers & bully them abt covering his fiancé's retracted masterpiece /6
REMINDER - if his partner ever faces serious repercussions, this could have a huge impact on his household income. /7
And as we know, he recently purchased an apartment with his partner... /8
Not to mention - if the team his partner runs (a team he is on) is known for fraud and unchecked relationships, their ad sales and status go down overall - he has a huge interest in the success of all podcasts at the @nytimes, not just #thedaily /9
In news this is called conflict of interest and is not considered ethical, yes? Well the @RTDNA has this to say.../10
So why is the NYtimes rallying around guys like Barbaro and Mills so hard? Unchecked bias and sexism! Barbaro's bosses think this is fine bc his bosses met their partners this way and they also don't want to lose status or money! (let's revisit both those interviews again) /11
It doesn't seem worth it to protect these guys, does it? There are so many ethical hosts and producers, it's an insult to all of us who work hard to uphold journalistic/ethical standards and those of us who RELY ON THE NEWS FOR INFORMATION! 12/12
