Roj Peshmarga currently operate as part of KDP forces in Iraqi Kurdistan and they are paid by KRG.
Roj Pesh has clashed before with Yazidi group YBŞ & have recently been deployed to areas where PKK operates in KRI. At least one Roj Pesh have died in clashes with PKK in December.

Interestingly, Roj Peshmarga were also deployed to Zakho in northwest Iraqi Kurdistan to suppress a protest in mid 2020 and later to Shiladze, another town in Duhok province (a Turkish base was attacked in this town in 2019).
Roj Peshmarga has been trained as part of KDP’s Zerevani force by Turkey in 2014-15 but they are not a Turkish proxy. They are a KDP proxy and under the direct command of Barzani; so they are as close to Turkey as KDP is.
Lastly, Roj Peshmarga is far closer to KDP than YPG has ever been to PKK ; KDP operates in a very centralised manner while PKK’s overall system is decentralised (partially because this is how Ocalanism works) and YPG’s ties to PKK are not as strict as they were in 2011.
