I'm seeing lots of teachers new to #RemoteLearning and #LiveLessons talking already about student burnout. As someone who has been online teaching since March, let me hit you with some pieces of information that might help... /1
1. Accept that your 'old' 100% cannot be your new '100%'.
2. You can adjust your expectations without adjusting your standards, don't let someone convince you that shortening your lesson is short-changing children /2
3. Asynchronous will become your new favourite word. Children will work at their own pace at their own time. You have three hours a week with Y10? Do a lesson intro, set them off to work, be available for help during your lesson. Set a deadline for work to be complete. /3
But do not teach three hours worth of classes and set homework on top. You will lose them. Can you convert what would have been an assessment into a project? Before COVID I would have said no, but my outlook on assessment has changed massively 4/
4. You will mess things up. You do it in person, but you feel more vulnerable about doing it online because THIS IS NEW TO YOU! You were not trained to teach online.
5. Try to replicate your real life warmth. You are happy to see your students online, so tell them. 5/
Your warm welcome might be the least stressed interaction they have with an adult, especially in a home where someone is ill/a key worker/the million other home scenarios.
6. You can do things to cheer each other up! We had a 'bring your pet to class' day and those of us 6/
that are pet-less enjoyed it immensely
7. Ask for feedback. Students want to succeed, but don't always know how to ask for something they need. Giving them an open opportunity can benefit you both! 7/
8. Elevate your computer somehow. Make sure you are in a comfortable position. I spent $15 on a laptop stand and it's improved my life tenfold.
9. Have simple saline eye drops to hand. You will stare at your computer like never before.
10. Get up (even for just a minute) 8/
between lessons. SHAKE IT OUT! I dance around my living room to ABBA, but your song preference is your own. Your back will thank you for it.
11. Stay in touch with colleagues. You will all learn from each other. From March until the end of the school year 9/
while we were fully remote and live, I had a well-being call with my work wife EVERY DAY. Troubleshoot, moan and celebrate together.
12. Remember that you can do ANYTHING but you cannot do everything.

Teachers, stay strong. This too shall pass! #OnlineLearning 10/10
I've shared some of the examples of revamped assessment here, both are physics assignments. 11/10 https://twitter.com/MsDowdSci/status/1349480995758731266?s=20
