I signed this letter as a reminder of the oath I swore more than 32 years ago. The rights protected by the Constitution have been a personal guiding principle. The violence we saw at the Capitol was a disgrace to those ideals.
I want to personally thank the @DCNationalGuard and all of the State Guards mobilizing to help support the security of the District. They have done an incredible job with the mission they've been given.
Local authorities ask people to stay away during inauguration events. Our Soldiers should make good decisions in this regard and remain professional at all times. Any activity that results in violence, a breach of peace, law, or civil disobedience may be punishable under UCMJ.
Instead, start a difficult conversation within your Squad. What does extremism look like in 2021? How does it impact unit cohesion? At what point does one's ideology 'cross the line'? These aren't new issues. Let's call out these corrosives that run counter to our Values.
