Very interesting comments in Le Figaro from Canal Plus chairman: Says company will not make an offer or enter private discussions to rescue Ligue 1 TV deal. Instead, says there should be public tender to correctly value rights. Says Canal will hand back its current package, too
Talks about a degree of bitterness at the way the league has treated the TV channel in recent times. "These are events that cannot be forgotten."
Expect a cratering in value of Ligue 1 TV rights when they are eventually sold again. "I believe that the Ligue 1 product has been degraded in absolute terms."
The level of incompetence from those that ran the league and sat on its board can be seen by how they alienated their historical partner in Canal. To ruin a relationship to such an extent is insane and once again shows up both the arrogance and incompetence of previous leadership
This is one of the things the Premier League focuses hardest on: keeping good relations with the losing bidders, knowing that there will be a new tender just around the corner. Alienating partners is an insane strategy
Have asked Ligue 1 to explain how clubs can now expect to earn income now that there are no rights holders whatsoever and got this reply: "no comment". Bon chance tout le monde!
