Our new report shows that, even before #COVID19 hit, too many people in the UK were caught in poverty’s grip and the pandemic has piled on new pressures and compounded existing strains. ⬇️ [THREAD] https://www.jrf.org.uk/report/uk-poverty-2020-21
💷 Following a decade of falling incomes as the value of benefit payments have decreased, millions were financially exposed when the pandemic hit, struggling to meet rising housing costs and borrowing money to cover unexpected bills.
📉 The economic storm caused by #COVID19 has impacted people already trapped in poverty as they were more likely to be working in hardest hit sectors, such as retail or hospitality. This has also had a disproportionate impact on women and Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups.
🔒 With the weight of a long, but necessary, third national #lockdown bearing down on people living in poverty, there's a very real risk that they will find it much harder to recover from the sustained economic shock #COVID19 has delivered.
The Government must make the right decisions to prevent another decade of deprivation. This means keeping the lifeline of the £20 uplift to #UniversalCredit and putting good jobs and affordable housing at the heart of our economic recovery. #KeepTheLifeline
