Sometime last year, my mother noticed that I get anxious when my fridge isn’t filled with food. It’s something I didn’t realise either until it hit me: When you’re forced into poverty, whether due to war or economic reasons, the anxiety of being food poor lasts forever.
I haven’t been food poor in a long time but still despite the fact I know I now have access to food and have the ability to afford it, the gnawing feeling of remembering how horrific it is to be a kid and not have enough to eat hits me. It’s been 20 years and it still bothers me.
This is what is actually going to impact children. Not them missing maths or English or a standardised test, but the fact they don’t have enough to eat. It’s shameful because my country didn’t have a choice, we were cut off and bombed. The UK is a wealthy and safe country.
Our kids deserve so much better. No child should be hungry. No child should be forced to wonder when their next meal is coming. Profits should not be put before kids. £30 of food should mean actually £30 of food, not half a tomato and the enrichment of companies.
