I found it hard to fall asleep last night

The combination of the worsening situation in our hospitals & the intergenerational trauma visited upon women & children by the state left me very unsettled

I think many of us felt that way yesterday

And will for a few days

But (1)
(2) news cycles change & in a few days it will be all too easy to move on but without our society changing

In the coming days we must be open & listen to the stories & needs of survivors & their families

As the brilliant @ClionaNi says:
(3) financial reparations must be accompanied by societal change to be impactful for survivors

We must acknowledge the disproportionate impact of the mother & baby homes on poor women & their children

We cannot wring our hands about the past but turn a blind eye to the present
(4) the truth is that we consistently punish & other people for their disadvantage as if being poor or disabled or having mental health issues is a moral failing

The harsh reality is that many survivors of & children of survivors are affected by addiction, homelessness &
(5) mental health issues: all conditions & situations for which we as a state & society are failing currently

We must look honestly at who we are othering & who we are failing now
(6) you need only look at @Minceirbeoir timeline to see the abuse she gets for highlighting that travellers are a vulnerable group for covid-19

Do we stand with her & stand up for her or do we stand by?
(7) I could say the same for @JoyTendai

As a nation of emigrants who know the toll are we an open Ireland whose culture is enriched by diversity & evolving for it?

Do we choose love & respect or hate & division?
(8) we must learn from the injustice of the past

End direct provision
End homelessness
End stigma for severe mental illness & provide access to meet need
Take a rights based approach to disability

Then we will have changed

Then we will have learned
And tbf I have to give a shout out to @Trickstersworld he’s platformed a lot of incredible advocates with lived & professional experience and I’ve learned a lot from listening in on podcasts from the team
