Today marks the end of the winter, as per Punjabi/Sindhi traditions. The festivals of Lohri/Lal Loi welcome the longer days, while commemorating the end of winter solstice. Although similar in sentiments and practice; the festivals do share minute differences among them:
Sindhis believe that the focus of Lal Loi should be on getting rid of old belongings and cleansing the mind. Whereas in Punjabi traditions, Lohri is seen as more of a harvest festival, and the celebration of the local hero 'Dulla Bhatti"
About Dulla Bhatti:

Known as the 'Robin Hood' of Punjab, he was known for his class wars during Akbar's reign - taking from the rich and giving back to the poor; as well as saving abducted girls from being sold into slavery.

A hero worth celebrating and remembering.
Lal Loi also involves what one could consider, the Sindhi version of Basant. Kites are flown on this day, unlike the region of Punjab where there is a designated festival for this activity.
It would make sense, as Sindh's usually arid climate makes wave for windy days ahead.

Lal Loi and Lohri both involve the worship of the Vedic sun-god Surya. Offerings and sweets often consisting sesame seeds, are prepared and distributed on this day.
The bonfire, is the central theme of this festival. Of course winter solstice festivals all over the world employ this particular practice; however for the people of the Indus Valley- the fire is much sacred. The Vedic God of Fire Agni, is worshipped here as well.
Another difference between the two, is that although the focus of Lohri is usually around the tale of Dulla Bhatti; for Sindhis, Lal Loi is a followup to the festival of Tirmoori (more on that later).
In essence, both the ancient festivals are one and same. The people of the Indus Valley, have been celebrating them for centuries.

Lal Loi/Lohri in conclusion, is about joy, communal tolerance and renewal of hopes and spirit for the coming year.

Happy #Lohri and #LalLoi to all!
