On self-awareness
A thread

As a student working part-time in an office, a lovely colleague, then in her early 60s, told me this:

A devout Christian, in the 1930s she was recruited by Hitler's BDM, a Nazi youth organisation for girls & young women. She loved the community and...
2/ - rising through the ranks - awards, titles & responsibility. Her pastor opposed the Nazis & didn't want his congregation to come to church in uniform. So she wore a coat during the services before going on to her BDM meetings.

Fast forward to 1945. The end of the war ...
3/ found her in a children's camp in today's Czech Republic, evacuated for safety. As the Red Army approached, the leader of the girls' camp told them to walk. Walk home, walk westwards.

She did, found her family, resumed life, went to church. There, her pastor asked her ...
4/ would she be willing to help with the youth organisation. She declined in horror. It was out of the question. After not having the sense, morals, decency to question, to doubt the BDM, after being seduced by the titles, rewards, responsibility she was given, how could she
5/ trust her own judgment? She should not be in charge ever again.

This is a story of honesty and self-awareness. Of being appalled at your own moral choices and learning from your mistakes. Of taking a step back and reviewing your decisions.

I believe this is ...
6/ what we must expect from everyone complicit w/ cruel administrations, in the US, UK, anywhere. That they don't save their skin & go for the next job, title, next position of power & influence. That they review their compliance. If not openly, at least honestly. And step back.
