Wow... Just finished watching the first episode of #WonderEggPriority. The description on MAL is intentionally short and obtuse. I think as the series gets deeper into the weeds, I think as an audience, we will find out more that was is described there. https://myanimelist.net/anime/43299/Wonder_Egg_Priority
I won't try to be as descriptive with the plot and what happens as in my other previous first look threads of other anime series. This show strives to show you its slowly unravelling story, rather than hold your hand with linear story telling and exposition.
First of all, the visuals in this are absolutely stunning. The characters especially as that will be the focus of this series. The opening scene has a tilt-shift focus look at Ai's small neighbourhood. This makes it look like you are looking at a toy or model figure version...
...of that neighburhood. It seems as if you are a larger being looking down, like an omnipresent being. After watching this episode, it seems to me that some entity is indeed pulling all the strings to their own benefit, fulfilling as of yet unknown objective.
The episode does a very good job handling its non-linear progression of time and memories to briefly, but with detail, the background of the Ai, the first character we see who has heterochromia. I think that will have much more meaning as we get further along this wavy plotline.
We quickly learn, throughout the first episode, she hasn't gone to school for sometime, who is an introvert, and is very lonely. Because of her heterochromia, she was constantly bullied at school and has also lost a dear friend that has greatly impacted her own life.
This is explored through her strange dreams and flashbacks, where we as as the viewer, we aren't entirely sure if what we're seeing (or Ai) is real or a metaphorical representation on dealing with her grief and the isolation she's in. And through some inexplicable events,...
Ai is drawn into world where dreams and reality aren't so separated and can have consequences as a result. This episode reminds me of another mind bending anime film, Paprika, where that too also explores the strange and dangerous world of dreams.
I think the major theme of this series is, how far are you willing to see a loved one again? What is the price you are willing to pay for? I think other anime like Mahou Shoujo Madoka, ask this question and attempts to answer that with the audience.
But unlike other series, I think #WonderEggPriority is giving it a different and very unique spin on it. It isn't your typical dark/edgy "magical girl" series either. Think of it as a combination of Madoka, Inception, and Paprika, you get this fantastic anime.
I'll leave you with some other fantastic screenshots of this show which I hope it doesn't let up on its metaphorical and allegorical story telling. I highly recommend as it makes you think and doesn't spoon feed you the plot.
A thanks to @TDevilfish and @SkyCorps for posting some screencaps earlier in the day which made me very curious as to what this anime is all about.
