The public is being kept in the dark about the full extent of the problems with Gorgon CO2 because @DWER_WA and Minister Dawson have issued a license that does not require real time reporting of CO2 injection at the facility

Taxpayers funded this #CCS folly on Barrow Island and we have a right to know how it is performing, yet it requires persistent FOI requests from @PeteMilne4 and others to get any information because the Minister & regulator refuse to require emissions reporting

The conditions on the new @DWER_WA operating license for Gorgon won’t be reviewed for another TEN YEARS. That means no pollution limits and the public kept in the dark for a decade.

We need to halve our CO2 pollution by 2030, but the new license for Gorgon locks in no limits on emissions from the facility to that date. This makes a total mockery of the WA Governments new climate policy and net zero carbon target

The original Ministerial Conditions for Gorgon require Chevron to provide alternative offsets if the #CCS does not work, yet @DWER_WA and Minister Dawson refuse to hold the company to account

This is denying hundreds of jobs for West Aussies in tree planting, carbon farming, renewable energy and other projects that could be offsetting Chevron’s excess CO2 right now

It is estimated that it would cost Chevron 2% of its WA LNG profits to offset ALL its direct carbon emissions (around 20MT per year minus what is pumped underground at Gorgon). This would create thousands of jobs here in WA.

The way Gorgon is regulated provides a textbook case a captured regulator. There are no pollution limits, there is no transparency on emissions, and there is no enforcement of ongoing breaches. It’s an international embarrassment.

The reality is Chevron’s taxpayer funded carbon capture system is failing and through inaction and design, the WA Government is complicit in the release of millions of tons of carbon pollution, while the public is kept in the dark about the ongoing breaches

The lack of regulatory oversight, disclosure and enforcement of Chevron’s failing Gorgon CCS facility is allowing the gas industry & Morrison to continue promoting this false solution while pushing expansion of gas production that is a time bomb for our climate
