Some #Giants offseason thoughts I grouped in a thread:
FREE AGENCY
1. Focus less on "projected cap space" and more on future contracts. Giants don't have much dead cap committed past 2022. If they want to spend, they can. Spending is advised w/ rookie on QB deal, but (continued)
Wiser to play the market. With COVID, NFL cap is coming down which will lead to the biggest buyer’s market in years. Some free agents will decide it’s better to sign 1-year deals and jump back into the market 2022. #Giants can capitalize on this (cont)
By signing someone, like say, Curtis Samuel, to a 1-year deal, they provide themselves flexibility in their roster-building at the WR position both in the coming draft and future offseasons. As for Samuel, he may not be exactly what (cont)
#Giants fans envision as WR1, but still just 24, Samuel created serious vertical separation in 2019 but suffered from QB play. He would add the speed element. Plus, he’s the ultimate weapon to be used in presnap motion and postsnap misdirection and can line up in backfield (cont)
There’s reason to believe Samuel (24) still hasn’t reached anywhere near his ceiling and #Giants would benefit from his vert separation (would be best to have him as boundary, moving Shepard to slot, and constantly putting them both in motion). Value play with underrated upside.
RT was a source of consistent struggle&bigger need than #Giants fans are talking about. A strong case can be made the highest-impact FA signing in 2020 was Conklin with the #Browns
2021 FA Taylor Moton is worth the $ and has been elite in pass pro since his first snap. Just 26.
DRAFT
I’m more open than usual to WR in Rd 1 with 4 prospects I really like (Smith, Chase, Waddle, Pitts), but there will be great WR prospects in Rd 2 and 3. Can the same be said about CB, EDGE or OT? The answer is likely no. #Giants Opportunity cost has to be considered (cont)
It’s no coincidence the #Giants hit on more Day 3 picks in 2020 than in more than a decade with 6 total picks. Hoping they learn from this and acquire more Day 3 picks for 2021. The idea is more swings = more chances to hit. Their unique defensive scheme = use Day 3 on D (cont)
COACHING
Seems the #Giants are set to go forward status quo with their 31st-ranked offense assuming return of 26 + draft/free agency will fix it. I don’t buy Jason Garrett changing this late into his career but hopefully, some Joe Judge scouting can make an impact. So (cont)
Garret's system needs: A lot more presnap motion, a lot fewer 2nd&long run calls, a screen game, more 11 personnel/spacing, and most importantly route combos that work off each other, create YAC (for EX, a lot more mills concept)
Anything close to what we saw in 2020 is not good.
