As much as I love Taiwan, can’t help but look at desire for immigration reform (easing rules on ROC citizens abroad & allowing dual nationality) and think about how it’s almost never about existing South East Asian migrants
Genuinely not a subtweet of anyone, there’s a lot of issues to solve, but often feel coverage of Taiwan and Hong Kong is a whirlpool of Westerners struggling against bureaucracy, ignoring the often racist policies and structures that more local migrants face
Anyway Taiwan has a really good opportunity to define itself as a multicultural bright spot in Asia, I hope it doesn’t squander that on Golden Visas and outdated thinking on citizenship
On the bizarre ROC National bureaucracy for those “returning home”, this is a great thread from @catielila: https://twitter.com/catielila/status/1348966982884868097
