I personally contacted quarantine staff, and they claim the issue is, lack of funding and facilities do not allow proper quarantine and rehabilitation of confiscated wildlife. They test for bird flu (I am not sure what other tests they have) and if clear they release the birds

The authorities themselves acknowledge the need for proper quarantine and rehabilitation procedure, however, the procedure and coordination required between government agencies to perform this itself, will be a very lengthy procedure.

Quarantine + rehabilitation of wildlife itself will be costly and require expertise, where the facilities, funds ad expertise are limited for daily operations itself. So the problem is, what best to do with confiscated wildlife? remains a dilemma

The authorities claim that the time required for all this, will likely cause birds to die anyway, we (the staff) cannot feed/ care for them and have no space. There is also a potential disease in the office. At least we want them to have a chance to live.

Release into the wild itself, may pose potential for species invasion and spread of disease. All which was mentioned to the staff.

Little work remain on analysing the impact of wildlife release into the wild post-confiscation in Indonesia. In Jakarta, many pet wild birds escape into urban areas. There are even people who make a livelihood by tapping these escaped birds and re-selling them.

More work+a closer look at wildlife management post-confiscation in many countries is needed. Of course in addition to that, prosecution etc that happens. If anyone knows nay work done in this field, I would appreciate if they can share. #birdtrade #wildlifeseizure #wildlifecrime
