Ariel is, as usual, on the money: the public debate about Trump's Twitter ban/the US insurrection is failing (or refusing) to reckon with our own right wing extremism at home.
Here's a few of the things I've been thinking about recently: https://twitter.com/arielbogle/status/1349111291059687425

The Christchurch killer was born here, raised here, and developed his murderous ideas while consuming Australian media and politics.
New Zealand has conducted an entire Royal Commission about a problem that came from Australia. We haven't bothered. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/dec/10/australia-must-reckon-with-the-fact-the-christchurch-terrorist-developed-much-of-his-hatred-here

One of our most popular media personalities believes in the Great Replacement theory (a racist idea that the white race is being 'bred out', something that the Christchurch killer espoused) https://twitter.com/cameronwilson/status/1272649555591323649
Another proponent of the Great Replacement theory and once-leader of the alt-right got given a plum gig on Sky News Australia no questions asked.
We literally had Australians trying to join The Base — a white supremacist hate group that ran training camps to prepare their members to commit terrorism — including one person who ran as a candidate for One Nation https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2020/08/12/base-exporting-accelerationist-terror
And ASIO says there's been a dramatic rise in right wing extremists they're keeping an eye on https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-09-22/right-wing-extremists-asio-islamic-state-tactics/12690002
And despite all this, there's no way you could get the sense that Australia's leaders are worried about the threat of right wing extremism.
We need to have a public debate about these issues, and have our leaders take steps to stamp this out before something happens again.
