Dear next gen #Earth scientists, here is how *not* to engage with the topic of OVERPOPULATION. A topic with deep roots in racism, eugenics, and modern eco-fascism means you can't just do the math and leave it at that. Even if you are @theNASEM member 1/ https://blogs.nicholas.duke.edu/citizenscientist/overpopulation/
Especially, ummm, the week after a mob of eco-fascists et al. stormed our capitol. 2/ https://heated.world/p/the-antler-guy-isnt-a-climate-activist?r=4e9a2&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=twitter
FYI Eco-fascism is a force at work in the world today 3/ https://www.gq.com/story/what-is-eco-fascism
And you can fight against it 4/ https://www.teenvogue.com/story/what-is-ecofascism-explainer
For example, anytime a scientist engages with the issue of overpopulation, I humbly suggest you engage with the hard part (the math is easy), and make sure you are not unintentionally providing fodder to the bad guys. @AGU_SciComm #Scicomm Learn more: http://outsideinradio.org/shows/2018/10/11/so-over-population 5/
To be CRYSTAL clear, when u talk about overpop. some will think you mean there are too many Black & Brown people on Earth (this is racist & I do not support that), but a good earth scientist knows it's all about *consumption/capita* mainly, to date, from white ppl like me. 6/
As nations improve their standards of living consumption per capita will increase, but saying that overpopulation is the problem obscures the consumption problem and takes the focus away from white ppl like me who need to organize just systems change to reduce consumption. 7/
