As a physician caring for Kansans, let me can tell you why proposed #HCR5003 ( #ValueThemBoth) amendment is dangerous. I focus solely on maternal fetal medicine – the care of sick moms and sick babies. #ksleg 1/x
My patients’ medical conditions are complex. Their personal lives are unique and no patient is ever the same. My mothers are often fighting cancer, struggling with severe cardiac disease, or desperately awaiting transplantation. A pregnancy might literally kill them. 2/x
Their fetuses may be up against a placenta that will never allow them a viable gestational age, terrible birth defects that will give them a short lifetime filled with pain, or a genetic code incompatible with life. This lifetime of suffering is unacceptable to many families. 3/x
My patients face impossible choices most people will never have to make. Their choices, including #abortion, are currently protected by our state constitution and should remain so. #HCR5003 makes no room for patients like mine. 4/x
To have an #abortion or not is a choice that should be between a patient and their doctor. To insert others, including politicians, into this decision is immoral and unethical. #ksleg, please consider my families - vote NO on #HCR5003.
