My personal opinion:

Prisons don’t solve the problem of people harming each other/society, and should cease to exist in its current form.

We need to research and construct something better.

However, while we’ve got them:
❌ Giving preferential treatment to white s*premacists? That’s bad.
✅ Giving everyone basic human necessities like food that is religiously + medically appropriate, enough menstrual supplies, medically appropriate access to private bathrooms and drinking water? That’s good.
✅ Appropriate medical care for everyone? That’s good.
❌ Solitary confinement? We have tons of research and international orgs that say it’s torture. Don’t...do that.
“But Noor, that’s giving prisoners what some people who don’t commit crimes don’t have!”

A) That’s a false binary, we criminalize poor people all the time
B) We should ABSOLUTELY be making sure everyone outside prisons has mandatory access to these things too!
I welcome you to join me as a part of a larger community of people starting to see that human rights aren’t something we should deprive anyone of. That’s not something that helps literally anything.

We have structural issues causing the majority of the shortage. Let’s fix them.
