You don't have to be publically known or famous to be successful.

Last night the songbird of our generation secured a $200 million bag.

Time for a mini thread on @RyanTedder's multi-million dollar deal.

👇👇👇
Tedder is an American singer/songwriter and the vocalist of the pop-rock band OneRepublic.

He has an independent career as a songwriter and producer for various artists, including Adele, Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, J-Lo, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, One Direction, Taylor Swift and more.
But before he made it in music Tedder worked as a waiter and a shop assistant at Pottery Barn before securing an internship at DreamWorks, where he sang on multiple demos.

He produced demos for songwriters and labels, charging $300 to $400 a track.
At the age of twenty-one, Tedder competed in and won a singer-songwriter competition.

Unfortunately, Tedder later discovered that the record and publishing deal he was offered "wasn't real. It was just a bunch of hype that didn't turn into anything."
One year after the competition, Tedder caught the attention of the hip hop producer Timbaland.

Tedder commented that he was with Timbaland from 2002–2004 to develop as an artist while producing for other artists at the time.
In 2008 Tedder went on to write and perform the song "Apologize" with OneRepublic.

It was the number-one most played song for five months until May 7, 2008 when Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love", a song co-written by Tedder, broke the record previously set by "Apologize".
In late 2009 he launched his own record company, Patriot Records, and continued work as an independent songwriter/producer.

As years went on Tedder's portfolio and catalog grew

He even became the first franchise owner of the Southern Hospitality BBQ brand.
In 2016, Mr. Tedder sold part of his publishing, excluding OneRepublic, to Downtown Music Holdings, which will continue to own and administer those copyrights.

Catching a little bag there.
Now it's 2021 and KKR & Co. has decided to invest $200 million into Tedder’s catalog of hits.

The deal includes a mix of certain copyrights and royalty streams for some 500 songs written, recorded or produced by Mr. Tedder for his band OneRepublic and other artists.
Tedder's bag is the latest draw-dropping deal in a storm of musical copyright transactions.

- Bob Dylan sold the rights to his catalog for over $300M
- Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks pulled in $80M for the rights to 80% of her catalog.

A trend we will continue to see.
The Conclusion: You don't need to be the face of a major band in order to be successful—and I know that sounds hypocritical—but Tedder would have been successful even without One Republic.

Talent is talent, and Tedder sure has a lot of it.
If you made it this far we greatly appreciate it.
