I don't have much to add to this github shit, except this:

when a company takes a stand, it tilts the balance on who is likely to apply, to want to work there, to stay working there, to feel safe, to feel empowered
and that goes in many directions. when I joined github, I had thought that was something I'd never do, b/c their reputation was so bad. but folks showed me what they were doing, where they were putting their money where their mouth was, where they were genuinely doing work
so I was like...you know what, maybe I _do_ want to work here. maybe this _is_ something I want to be a part of!

and I got to be on the best team of my life, and do my best work of my life (so far)
when Nat sent a letter to all of us explaining that we absolutely would not be canceling the contract with ICE, that he thought continuing it was in fact the _right thing to do_

that too sent a signal, tilted the table, on who might work at github, who might stay, who'd leave
would this all have happened when I first joined? who knows, maybe. it's not that they ever had a time of being "perfect"

but certainly since then, the company has become _more_ a place that people who think calling the right-wing extremist capitol stormers nazis feel safe
which ultimately means that the overton window of what is considered acceptable workplace conduct changes, to the point where correctly calling them nazis is considered bad behavior
