Trump represented a moderate, but real threat to the machine. Elites from before 2014ish would have handled him, given him some victories while stifling anything major then in 2024 replaced him.

The causes were probably some combination of:

1) Social media accelerating news cycles and siloing ideologues and the elite.

2) A lack of actual leadership among the elite, likely due to Hillary destroying potential usurpers to her coronation...

3) Millenials, particularly elite millenials, eating shit economically after the 08 housing collapse and never really recovering.

4) A sense of victory stolen. Obama's 2nd term was to be a victory lap before Hillary's coronation and final victory, stolen by an orange showman.

5) And zoomers just being screwed up in every way as their identity formation is taking place in vacuum devoid normal identity formation processes which were replaced by porn, insta, and vidya, and them just accelerating everything because of it.
