How's Australian aid performing when we look at the numbers?

A new @devpolicy report I co-authored investigates: https://devpolicy.org/what-australian-aid-flows-show-20210113/

Thread follows.

(1/8)

Most donors have become more generous since the 1970s. Australia has become a lot less.
And when its affluence is taken into account, Australia is a particularly tightfisted donor (2/8)
There are problems of practice too. One that struck me was just how little Australia focused on helping countries with climate change adaptation. (3/8)
Indeed, even in the Pacific its climate change adaptation focus has been woefully low. (The primary focus figure in the chart is the one you need to worry about.) (4/8)
On the other hand, its gender focus is great, and this is an important achievement. (5/8)
And, on the most important measure, it doesn't fragment its aid across countries much. (6/8)

(A higher score is better on this chart).
It also performs well in muting the volatility of its aid to individual recipients, an important achievement given how volatile overall aid has been (7/8)
