“One size fits all” Feminism upholds white supremacy and continues to leave Black women unprotected and invisible. - A thread.
I see “feminists” everywhere talk about the gender pay gap, while refusing to acknowledge the pay gap between white women and WOC. The failure to address the disparities in pay between Black women and White women screams white supremacy.
Taking feminism in a “one size fits all approach” only benefits one person. The white woman. If you are going to talk about the gender pay gap. You better make sure you talk about the pay gap between white women and women of colour.
Black women are not being paid fairly. In a day and age where many white women capitalise off of our traumas and resistance to white supremacy, in most cases they naturally benefit from the racial pay gap also.
On average in the US Black women are paid 21% less than white women. Structural and interpersonal racism that is upheld in the work space, makes it increasingly difficult for Black women to also receive promotions and raises at the same rate as white women.
Let’s not forget about the countless of other issues black women face in the work space. In addition to the gender inequalities, women from ethnic minority groups also experience racial and ethnic inequality.
When we talk about the gender inequalities we must also talk about all other inter-sectioning inequalities, such as race. minority women have been erased from the feminist movement from the beginning, even now Black women are invisible when it comes to discussing these issues.
We cannot talk about ALL women as a collective group, we have to be intentional in centring the most marginalised women in this space.
