after looking at some of my old essays I made a promise with myself never to write a full essay about twitter again. I almost broke that promise today to write about the very aggressive tweets I got after I said I would not be watching THE WHALE. lol so instead, here is a thread.
the hold hollywood films and hollywood directors have on the collective imagination is both disturbing and so, so boring. there are so many movies and filmmakers out there and yet you all are obsessed with pressuring people into paying attention to only Hollywood all the time.
in the last 5 years, there has been a large diversity push which then lead to an inevitable backlash to identity politics in media. it has now become common practice to get angry when anyone says they don't want to watch a Hollywood film based on who is making & starring in it.
but, thing is, people have always made consumption choices based on who is making the movie & who stars in it. this is not a new thing. people only treat it as a new thing bc they feel personally attacked by a diversity push that, by the way, hasn't actually been successful! lol
for example: I am a Black woman. let's say a white female Hollywood director makes a film about Black women. if I say I don't want to watch it, esp publicly, the assumption is that I don't want to watch it because I'm offended she made it. the true reason? Hollywood is boring.
yesterday when I said I wasn't watching THE WHALE bc it's directed by a man who doesn't understand fatness, starring a man who doesn't understand fatness based on a play that doesn't understand fatness the assumption is I'm letting ID politics stop me from watching a good film
but the truth is: I'm not watching the movie bc it is probably going to be bad. at best, it's going to be mediocre. how do I know? it's not just bc of who is making it. it's because I don't care what Hollywood has to say about fatness and whatever it is, it's probably stupid.
there is no way THE WHALE could be good because it's based on a bad play and it's being marketed as being about "the obesity epidemic" which is a misleading, dangerous phrase in the first place. I would feel the same way if a fat person made it. it's a stupid idea! lol
Hollywood has stupid instincts about weight. it has stupid instincts about disability. it has stupid instincts about race. it's not identity politics that keep people away from these movies. it's that these movies are bad. and most of you only defend them to be contrarian.
notice that this angry contrarian argument only springs up with movies that will likely be awards contenders. if I said I didn't want to watch a horror movie or a romcom or an action flick, no one would care. yall are specifically protective of the most obvious awards efforts.
if I say I'm not watching the movie it also means that I'm not reviewing it. so I will have absolutely no influence on whether or not people watch it. so why are you policing my tweets? because Hollywood is your boyfriend and you refuse to get your mouth of his dick. it's WEIRD,
break up!!! free yourself!!!
