CDN weather news:
"Not what we expected"
"Cold is coming"
"Warmer than normal"
"More like El Nino"
"Expect more warm shots"
"Cold air trapped in the Arctic"
...yet no mention of climate change? Why, @weathernetwork @accuweather @environmentca @gtaweather1 @CP24 @680NEWS @CBCNews?
Silence gives an impression climate change is distant, unrelated, not linked to local weather or climate. We know global 🌡️ rising, there's less cold air in Arctic and overall, trends in sea/lake ice spiral down, the jet stream gets weaker and odds of blocking patterns increase.
It seems only the briefest mention is permitted, or the rare dedicated article that far fewer see. Why is it so difficult for scientists with weather companies and even Environment and *Climate Change* Canada to share these trends/impacts *within* weather forecasts and news?
Climate change doesn't stop because of what's happening with "storm tracks", "atmospheric circulation patterns", "La Nina" or other multi-year air and temp regimes - climate trends don't go away, they're getting stronger!
Related, it's interesting how few weather news articles talk about warmth in the Great Lakes, especially Southern Ontario? Near record-low lake ice (including long-term forecast) and warm temps everywhere despite relatively high (but frequently, rapidly melting) total snowfall.
The lack of climate education, even within institutions that should care the most about it, is alarming. If most meteorologists/scientists/journalists won't talk about it + help us connect the dots, what hope is there? Cc: @CJusticeTO @protectwintersc @350Canada @CitizensLobbyCa
Was nice to see climate change raised in the first show @CBCNews #CanadaTonight, @JWagstaffe @Ginella_M! Yet soon after mentioned, the show moved on. Still better than most news I see, but why can't we give this crisis, ever, the lasting attention it deserves, on a "main stage"?
