I'm by no means an expert, but these are just a few lessons I've learned (sometimes the hard way) as both an applicant and a hiring manager:

Single pieces of work serve a great purpose, but campaign work can showcase your flexibility to work within a brand/style guide.
If a cover letter is required, also treat it as part of your portfolio.
Quality over quantity. Show your best work, not ALL of it.

It's okay if you didn't conceptualize a campaign or didn't lead in the art direction, but be honest about your contributions to a collaborative project. Use it as an opportunity to highlight how you worked as a team to accomplish the final product.

Be ready to explain your design decisions. Context can make the work even stronger and providing insight shows a potential employer how you problem solve.

At the end of the day, sharing work can be scary, especially when it's laid out for public consumption and sometimes, opinion; but at the end of the day, remember that when you create, you bring life to ideas, emotions, and experiences.
That in itself is pretty special.
