prioritization was established for a reason: we don’t have enough vaccines for everyone. Yes, it was clunky and needed to be radically simplified. But getting rid of it altogether, just opening it up to 100-million-plus ppl, doesn’t solve much.
Web portals are crashing and phone lines are crashing and people everywhere are scrambling to sign up or show up for a shot that they are now technically eligible for but still can’t actually get bc there still aren’t enough shots, nor enough ppl to give shots, etc.
We are swinging wildly from too convoluted and technically careful to too reckless and impractical. We are solving the wrong problems: supply is not the problem rn. Eligibility is not the problem rn.
And we are sewing so much disdain and mistrust: we have to prioritize! No wait, we don’t! Two shots because trials matter! No wait, just give one shot or two half-shots! Equity is a priority! No wait, who cares about equity just get shots into arms! Any arms!
And look, I agree speed is crucial right now - that’s not really what I take issue with. But my god can we set priorities and make a plan and then stick to it?
