There is a direct line between the #motherandbabieshomes report and Stephen Donnely’s “a lot of things happened”.
It's always passive - things just happen, no-one is ever responsible.
And that is why Ireland's citizens are failed, time and time and time again.

Things didn’t “just happen”.
These women didn’t make themselves pregnant.
They didn’t abandon themselves.
The children, some as young as 12, didn’t rape themselves.
They didn’t lock themselves up.
They didn’t cover up the deaths of children in the “care” of church and state.

As it has been since the foundation of the state, a small number of powerful men called the shots, and the rest of the country fell into line.
Those at the bottom bore the brunt, and they still bear it.
It’s no less sickening now than it was then.

And to cap it all, ministers - representnatives of the same party that brought you this century of rape and penury and misery stood there today and said “never again”, knowing full well that Direct Provision will be the subject of a similar report in 30 or 40 years.
But by then they will have died in their beds, never having faced the consequences of their twisted view that their fellow human beings were somehow lesser than themselves.
Fix that, or live forever in a broken republic, barely worth the name.
