Who is this person and how is someone so ignorant and also so confident about the MENA at the same time? Sunni dictatorships have supported Shia groups and Shia dictatorships have supported Sunni groups because believe it or not, dictatorship doesn't care https://twitter.com/EmmaVigeland/status/1349026958596780035
Iran's regime has supported Sunni militant groups (Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine are Sunni). The Saudi regime has its own record too (e.g. supporting Shia monarchists in Yemen in the 1960s vs republicans). You think "Sunni vs Shia" is all you need to get us figured out?
And for the record the Iranian regime *did* facilitate Alqaeda and the Taliban, this isn't news. The goal was simple, to ensure that the US occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq fails, to ensure that Iran isn't next. Assad supported Jihadists until 2008 for the same reason.
And please Americans stop your disgusting essentializing of the region into Sunnis vs Shias, Arabs vs Iranians vs whatever else. The MENA is Sunni and Shia and Christian and Jewish and more. It's Arab and Kurdish and Iranian and Turkish and more. We're all in this together.
You don't get a solution to the MENA's problems by burying your head in the sand. And yes the Iranian regime is a regime of thugs and war criminals. The Saudi regime is also a regime of thugs and war criminals. The US pressures one while bending over for the other. Facts.
And yes I know Pompeo is fucking lying through his teeth. The home base of Alqaeda in the Middle East is Idlib, Syria and there's no dispute among experts on this point. This doesn't mean that the Iranian regime didn't facilitate Alqaeda in the past, it did.
