here’s how to ask for a mental health day from work: a thread
we’ve said it before, we’ll say it again. mental health is just as important as physical health! we all need a break sometimes but asking for a mental health day from work can be awk. don’t worry: we’ve got ya covered!
#1: you don’t have to say why. mental health can be really personal! if your boss is pressing you for details (not cool btw) it’s okay to say you’re not comfortable sharing
#2: keep it short. justifying a mental health day with a big, elaborate story? nahhh. a simple: “hey I need a mental health day. can I take the day off?” should be enough!
#3: be direct. don’t skirt around the subject: just say what you need to say! be honest and clear so there’s no miscommunication
#4: ask asap. you don’t wanna put anyone else in a tough position at work. plus, prepping for your absence makes asking for the day off less scary. no problemo, all of your bases are covered!
#5: practice what you’re gonna say. if you’re suuuper nervous to ask your boss, having a mini script in your mind will make you feel 1000x more confident going into the conversation. no need to improv!
#6: write a list of reasons why you need this mental health day. if your boss pressures you to come in, look at the list. remind yourself: you DESERVE a break!
#7: be prepared for different reactions. not everyone will be understanding which really sucks. but stand your ground and communicate your needs! your feelings are valid
#8: you don’t have to ask for a mental health day if it’s causing too much stress/anxiety. if taking a sick day is what you’re comfortable with right now, that’s ok! you’ll get there someday
we believe 100% that taking mental health days from work should be normalized. let’s break the stigma, baby!
