Battler and Ange, and the Quest for Love and Truth

(Major Spoilers for Umineko*)
Another display of familial love in Umineko is between Ange and Battler. Now, Ange and Battler have one of the most interesting relationships I've ever seen. First of all, Battler is the son of Asumu and Rudolf, while Ange is the daughter of Kyrie and Rudolf, this creates some
interesting roadblocks. Ange still loves Battler, even after she knows that Battler isn’t from the same Mother. Ange loves Battler back as well. Ange isn’t introduced until episode 4, where she lives in the future, after the Rokkenjima massacre. All she seeks is the truth of that
day, this creates an interesting journey that parallels the events of Rokkenjima. Ange is my second favorite character in all of Umineko, and there are many reasons as to why. Ange and Battler’s dynamic really shines in Episode 8, but there are many things that lead to that. Ange
misses her family lots, especially Battler Ange has had a very difficult life. She was raised by Eva because her family died in Rokkenjima. Eva treated her terribly because she was tremendously sad by the loss of her son. She takes her grief out on Ange which causes a sour
relationship between the two. After Eva dies, she passes the Ushiromiya families’ wealth onto Ange. Ange thinks she does this with a bad intent because many people think Eva got the wealth because of scandalous means. So, Ange thinks she passed on the wealth with bad intent. We
learn tons more about Ange as the story progresses. We learn that she used to believe and “wield” magic. We learn that she went to a very high-class school, and in that school, she was very lonely. Many rumors about her and her family were spread which saddened her even more.
Maria’s ghost and the 7 sisters of purgatory were her only friends, they can be viewed as imaginary because only Ange can see them. Ange generally gets bad grades in school. This leads to her being held after class to study with her fellow peers. And this creates one of my
favorite scenes in fiction. Ange gets bullied very badly in the classroom, and she tries to persevere but at one moment she just snapped. She tries killing all of her school mates by asking the 7 sisters of purgatory to do it. This fails because Ange doesn’t have the resolve to
kill her classmates. She blames this failure on the 7 sisters of purgatory, causing them all to break and die, she also kills Maria and Sakutaro while she’s at it. When she’s on Eva’s death bed, Ange asks for the truth of the Rokkenjima massacre and Eva ultimately refuses. After
Ange inherits everything from Eva(including the title of the golden witch) Ange searches for the truth of Rokkenjima. As Ange searches for the truth of Rokkenjima, she is hunted down by Kasumi Sumadera who seeks to take the Ushiromiya family wealth for herself. Throughout this
journey, she learns many things such as love, and hatred. She also learned the reason that Maria says her phrase, “UuuUuu” At the same time. Ange learns that she is a Witch of Resurrection who revives Sakutaro to free Maria from the bonds of hatred, ultimately showing her that
love will prevail. In the Meta-world, she plays Beato’s game as Bern’s piece and assists Battler in the match. She made a condition with Bern, which states that she cannot reveal her identity. So, she then goes by the persona of Gretel. She is pained by knowing that Battler
doesn’t know who she is, but she perseveres as it will help Battler, her brother. As the fourth game progresses, Ange helps Battler during many situations, which further deepens their bond. Near the end of the fourth game, Battler falls into despair. To help him Ange tries to
encourage him by telling him that his little sister is waiting for him at home. She also says, "Don't leave me...alone..." Which causes Battler to think that Gretel is Ange(which she is) and Ange gets torn to shreds in the Meta-world, which leaves Battler even more devastated.
But this serves to show the love Ange has for Battler. It also gives Battler a new conviction that allows him to defeat Beato in the fourth game. Ange doesn’t show up again till Episode 6 where she meets with Featherine and reads through the events of the 6th game. She learns a
lot about love during this game as well, because the 6th game included the love trials. She also learns more about Battler’s relationship with Beatrice, she also becomes sympathetic to “chick” Beatrice. Ange also shows up again during the Episode 7 tea party, where Bernkanstel
shows the “true” events of Rokkenjima, in which Rudolf and Kyrie are the culprits, which destroys Ange. Later in the tea party Battler finds a child Ange who wants to learn the events that transpired on Rokkenjima. Battler agrees and gives her a key. Battler is very kind and
soft-spoken to Ange. This leads to the beginning of Episode 8, where Battler and Ange’s relationship shines. Ange arrives at Rokkenjima(in the form of a child) and you can see how happy she is, She looks delighted the entire boat ride. After meeting with the family, she can see
that something is wrong, and she calls Battler out on this farce. And Battler still persists in showing her this, Ange puts aside her concerns and continues with the festivities. After the quiz session, Ange falls asleep in the parlor. She then finds that she is locked in the
parlor, and tries to escape via the back door, this leads her to the dining room where she finds a terrifying sight. This was apart of Bern’s game that Battler and Beatrice had to solve, and they did. She finds out that the culprits of the murder were Battler, Kyrie, and Rudolf.
This leads to her being assaulted by many Goats trying to convince her that this is the truth. She is then saved from this fate by Erika and Eva-Beatrice. In the real world, Featherine reveals the Book of Single Truth, which contains the actual events. After finding out about
this, Ange seeks this book on the game board because she thinks that Battler is lying to her. Now, I believe that what Battler is actually trying to show Ange is love. But Ange denies this love for the prospect of truth, Thus she ascends to Ange-Beatrice and seeks out the Book
of Single truth. Battler & Beatrice try and stop her from finding this “truth” so Beatrice battles with Ange and Battler fights with Erika. Ange ultimately wins because of her abilities and receives the Book of Single Truth, but first, she has to go to the City of Books, to make
the book safe for viewing. After she views the truth, she cannot accept it. She wakes up in the Golden Land and tries to create a plan with Battler to stop the Book of Single truth from getting out to the spectators. She fiercely fights through the city books and fights with
Battle to defeat Bern. Bernkastel kills Battler, which leaves Ange almost hopeless. But then, Ange unlocks her true powers as the Witch of Resurrection. She effectively destroys Bern’s red truth and Beatrice’s cat box is safe. Ange is sent off by her family, through a door. The
magic ending is the more fulfilling ending in the story. Ange is sent off by her family back to the real world. You can see in her eyes how much she loves them, and how much she will miss them. She has successfully achieved love. She gives the entire Ushiromiya family to Okonogi
and becomes a successful author. Because she is a successful author, she gets the chance to meet with Hachijo Tohya. She found out that Hachijo Tohya is actually her brother, Battler. And the female with him is Hachijo Ikuko. She learns that Battler/Tohya had lost his memories
after drowning in the sea near Rokkenjima. And that is partly the reason that Battler didn’t meet Ange later on. Battler/Tohya reveals that he did get his memory back, after hearing about the name Rokkenjima. Which causes Ange to break down in tears. She asks Battler/Tohya why he
didn’t come to visit her in her darkest times. Battler/Tohya tells Ange the reason, and it’s a very good reason. It’s because after his memories came back, he felt as though, Battler’s memories were not his own. And it caused him to feel very strange. To try and settle this
feeling, Tohya wrote about the events that transpired in Rokkenjima. This also causes Ange to break down, as she feels bad for this man, who is really her brother but not at the same time. Ange realizes Battler/Tohya’s pain and lets him be in peace by not calling him Battle, but
Tohya. This is another example of how much Ange loves Battler because if she was really reckless, she would’ve tried and get Battler back, but instead, she does what’s best for Battler and leaves him be. She then invites him to a Halloween party that mimics the one that Battler
showed Ange during the 8th game. This shows that she remembered the love from the event, and it shows how dedicated she is to Battler.
