As armed groups wreak havoc across #CAR in the wake of the elections, trade routes are being interrupted. More than half (!!!) of its people already need humanitarian assistance, and now food is quickly becoming more scarce and prices are skyrocketting. https://bit.ly/3sjG11O
In Bouar, armed groups, and efforts to stave them off, have indeed disrupted trade and the availability of food. But have also forced 5000 people to hide in religious buildings across the city. Calm has returned, but the fear has not stopped. This fear can be found across CAR.
In the southeast city of Bangassou, many are hiding out in the city's cathedral with limited access to food and water and sanitation facilities, and thousands more have fled into DRC in the hopes of finding safety.
The pre- and post-election events have worsened an already alarming and dire humanitarian situation, eroded the hope of many, and may prove fatal for CAR's 2019 peace agreement.
Since mid-December, thousands have fled their homes as armed groups have attempted to take power of key towns. Though many civilians have returned home, around 90,000 Central Africans are still displaced: 2/3 of which are internally displaced and 1/3 in neighbouring countries.
In Dec. 2020, @UNOCHA published its 2021 humanitarian response plan which estimated that the humanitarian community would require 444 million dollars to respond to the #CARCrisis for the year.
Recent events have already increased the number of people in need, and will increase the total amount of funding required. If history repeats itself, the response will not receive the funding it so desperately requires.
