BAR is a trajectory of anarchistic/anti-hierarchical thought and practice stretching back to precolonial African traditions, finding relative expression across anti-colonial resistance, slave revolts, maroonage, anti-apartheid struggle, queer/trans liberation struggle, and more.
Nameless for a while, if took on explicit character in the 60s/70s period and afterward, going under various names each with unique expressions. Diverse as hell, drawing from a range of Black revolutionary traditions, Black Anarchic Radicalism is distinct from classical anarchism
because it prioritizes bringing a concrete form to the anarchist ‘critique of all authority’ by centering the margins and underclasses—those impacted by the convergence of dominations—as key to the anarchist ‘bottom up’ view, esp the struggles of trans and disabled Black folk
It also centers the demise of Euro-colonialism as key to undoing of the bourgeois State to which classical anarchism was a response. So alongside the Black feminist idea of interlocking oppression, BAR foregrounds Decolonization as pivotal once again to fulfilling anarchist aims
In this way, BAR grounds struggles for Autonomy in Womanism + Disability Justice, & pursues them via insights from Pan Africanism, Third Worldism, Black Marxisms, Leninisms, Maoisms, and other materialist traditions that aren’t historically associated with the anarchist movement.
The latest expressions of BAR have begun espousing counter humanist, social ecology, and antihumanist lines of thought, each an attempt to address concerns about climate crisis through combatting anthropocentrism and its entanglement in capitalism, the State, colonialism, etc
Equally important to contemporary development of BAR is the modern abolitionist movement, address concerns with surveillance and the carceral state, and their implications in environmental devastation, imperialism, the class war, ableism, colonialism-capitalism, and the State
It is within this milieu that It is in thid Anarkata emerges as a recent expression of BAR, the express purpose of fostering a focused “Turn” in Black struggles toward deeper studying and movement building on the various BAR expressions, to advance the Autonomist project further
To fulfill these goals, the reclamation of the label is not required so long as the family of BAR principles and orientation toward our movement histories is what is being taken up and built upon.
But the label ‘Anarkata’ is there so that it is known that this is for BLACK/AFRICAN PEOPLE to fulfill, to turn toward deeper appreciation & application and improvement of the rainbow of methods, ideologies, principles, understandings in Black Autonomous/Anarchic Radical history
