For Catholics to reclaim wholesome and holy participation in politics, we need to be challenged and change on two fronts, as far as I can tell.
First, we need to recognize that we have allowed the world to define power and victory for us.
First, we need to recognize that we have allowed the world to define power and victory for us.
We have completely forgotten that worldly power killed Christ and so we joyfully grab hammers and drive the nails into Jesus while taking pride in how vigorously we defend him.
We've put all our marbles in the bags of politicians and parties that only see us as means to an end.
We've put all our marbles in the bags of politicians and parties that only see us as means to an end.
Scripture is not subtle in laying out what we are to do:
Worship God, stand for the poor and vulnerable, care for those in need, reject racism/racist structures, sacrifice, pray, serve, bleed...
Yet what do we do? Pick one or two of those the price of the rest & pretend this is

Yet what do we do? Pick one or two of those the price of the rest & pretend this is
our only option.
Stop dragging Jesus into your politics and lay your politics at the feet of Jesus. Let him break your heart for the plight of the unborn, the immigrant, the poor, the victims...all of them.
Let that heartbreak compel you to serve & love all.

Our 2nd mistake is that rather than letting Christ transform our political parties, we let our political parties transform Christ.
In our pride & brokenness, in our hunger for true community, we attach ourselves to political movements & politicians instead of The Body of Christ.
In our pride & brokenness, in our hunger for true community, we attach ourselves to political movements & politicians instead of The Body of Christ.
Many Catholics are more faithful to their political parties than Jesus and the hell to be paid for this is being shown even now, before our final judgement.
When the Body of Christ resorts to unprovoked violence, then we have failed at the ground level.
When the Body of Christ resorts to unprovoked violence, then we have failed at the ground level.
Let's resist the urge to use Christ as an excuse rather than the source.
Let's make political parties earn our votes, instead of defaulting to the lesser of two evils.
Let's commit to lives of service and love, no matter who resides in Washington.

Please, pray about this. If you think I am wrong, please pray for me.
We need to be better. We need to do better.
We need to be better. We need to do better.
