Governor @AsaHutchinson opens his State of the State address with remarks on the "violent mob assault on our nation's Capitol."

"It is OK to be passionate, but we must not allow our passion to cloud our judgement."
Then he transitions into the agenda for the legislative session, saying he disagrees with those who think the session will be "acrimonious" and unproductive. #arpx
Addressing the economy, Hutchinson says the states is in its "best budget position in more than a decade" despite being hit by covid-19 pandemic. Cites better-than-expected revenues and savings from trimming staff.
"You need to act" to affirm ongoing public health emergency, Hutchinson tells lawmakers. (They declined to do so after he made a similar request late last year). #arpx
The governor is now reading letters he's received in support of his proposed hate crimes legislation, which already faces a steep path in the Senate.

"My only request is that you listen and make your own judgements" on the bill. #arpx
Arkansas is one of only three states without a hate crimes law (South Carolina and Wyoming are the others).

Hutchinson makes sure to include letters from the business community about the impact that distinction has on the state's reputation (which they say impacts recruitment).
Now the governor is talking about something that's more in the vein of what legislative Republicans like: tax cuts. $50 million worth.
