why quote-retweeting art can be harmful: a thread

[non-artists encouraged to retweet]
disclaimer: this is mostly a personal preference thing, and every artist has different opinions/preferences on this. this thread explains why you shouldn’t qrt without having permission from the artist.
the main problem with quote-retweets is that they take away interactions away from the original post/art. for example, if a person likes a qrt instead of the original tweet, it makes it harder for an artist to get interactions + attention.
interactions, especially replies and REGULAR retweets are very important for artists because it’s a way of getting more people to see your art and get discovered.
another point is that twitter algorithm specifically values replies over anything else, meaning that quote-retweets drive away replies from the original artwork.
this is especially true for viral quote-retweets. they take away attention from the actual art and instead distract people with commentary.
so what should you do if you want to quote-retweet art?

1. have permission from the artist
2. retweet the artwork regularly along with quote-retweeting it
3. also reply to the original tweet
