What can a commercial office building in metropolitan Seattle teach us about behaviour change? Keep reading!



1/ The @Bullitt_Center opened in 2013 near Capitol Hill, pegged as “The Greenest Commercial Building in the World” w/ a “Living Building” certification from @Living_Future. What makes the building unique is a design element that helped occupants connect & burn calories doing so.
2/ To achieve their energy conservation goals, designers needed to answer the question: How do we get people to use the elevator less? Enter “The Irresistible Staircase”, a prime example of how our environments influence & shape our behaviours and habits.
3/ The “Irresistible Staircase” is a towering marvel of douglas fir, glass and steel running the entire 6 stories of the building & offers some of the most breathtaking views of Seattle. It is is a focal point when you enter the building, enticing people to take the stairs!
4/ Cool story, but what does this teach us about behaviour change? In their book Switch, Chip & Dan Heath call this “Shaping the Path”. Tweaking the environment to make it easier or more attractive to engage in a particular behaviour.
5/ By shaping our environment to encourage and enable desirable behaviours, it makes it easier for us to build habits which is at the core of behaviour change according to Behaviour Scientist @bjfogg and author @JamesClear.
6/ As people see others taking the stairs we are effectively “Rallying the Herd”, influencing others to adopt the new behaviours. Behaviour is contagious. Humans tend to follow societal norms. The staircase was a success w/ 75% of trips originating on 2nd floor taking the stairs.
7/ Our environment is more than just our physical surroundings however, it also includes the individuals and groups we surround ourselves with or our digital environment; the people we follow on Twitter or Facebook or the blogs we read.
