Every day I understand more about why, for almost 50 years, my field has been shouting “there are limits to growth” and not getting through in a way that leads to substantive change.
After all, its a simple matter of math and physics. And the consequences are by now so devastatingly apparent.
Why has the existence of limits never truly sunk in at a mass culture level? Why was that 1972 work pushed back against so hard?
Maskless GOP congress people are helping me see why.
The DC rioters with their sense of impunity are helping me see why.
“There are no limits (on me)” is a key tenant of white supremacy and colonization, isn’t it?
Admitting there might even *be* ecological limits would destabilize the whole supremacist worldview.
The idea of limits cannot be accepted without the whole rest of the edifice of white supremacy, conquest and domination coming down too.
For this (and many other) reason I think climate advocates will do well to focus not just on the limits of the climate system and how near they are, but also on challenging the worldview that there is a group of people to whom limits do not apply in the first place.
