People need to step back from the details and focus on the single, most damning point:

There was no legitimate, lawful reason for a defeated president to be summoning a mob to the Capitol.

His constitutional responsibility was to oversee a peaceful transition of power.

We are losing sight of the simplest indictment.

A president who lost an election refused to accept his defeat and instead fomented insurrection.

A president violated oath and law at the moment when his duty most called for safeguarding our democracy’s sustaining principle.

2/
Donald J. Trump, having been defeated, led a two-month campaign in violation of the constitutional mandate that he effect a peaceful continuation of our democracy.

This is, in my mind, as vile a treason as any ever committed.

Impeachment is insufficient.

3/
Donald J. Trump, having been defeated, led a comprehensive effort to thwart the transition of power to the incoming administration.

His fomenting of violence was but a last sedition in a long campaign of treasons.

He must be not only removed but prosecuted.

4/
If the President of the United States can personally attempt to lead a coup from the Oval Office without punishment, we are not a nation of laws.

We are a ship adrift and listing toward the ruin of fascism.

Our democracy demands Trump be prosecuted. It demands it.
