The longer I work for myself, the more differences I see between being an employee vs. being self-employed as a founder or freelancer.
The difference in mindset is insane. Being an employee starts to look actively harmful to mental health.

EMPLOYEE: Decides what to do based on making manager happy/getting promoted. Manager decides what to do based on what gets *them* promoted. Repeat for every layer of management. No consideration of personal goals.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Decides what to do based on personal goals.

SELF-EMPLOYED: Decides what to do based on personal goals.

EMPLOYEE: Works super hard, exceeds all their goals. If they're super lucky, if it was a long time since their last promotion, & if their boss likes them, they *might* get a 5-15% pay rise .
SELF-EMPLOYED: Works super hard, exceeds all their goals. Income grows 2-10x .

EMPLOYEE: Has no choice but to spend precious hours of their life *every week* in completely pointless meetings.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Attends meetings only when it will help them progress them towards a goal or make them happy.

EMPLOYEE: Gets asked to do pointless work. Can argue & risk their carefully built reputation, or do it anyway & hate every second.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Realises something is pointless. Stops doing it. Reconsiders what they were trying to achieve. Takes more effective action.

EMPLOYEE: Finds a way to automate a tedious task. Doesn't do it for fear of punishment. Or does it, then gets given 10 times as many tasks to do instead.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Finds a way to automate a tedious task. Does it. Increases their leverage. Repeats the process.

EMPLOYEE: Can't wait to finish for the day. Can't wait for the weekend. Feels sick thinking about work on Sunday night.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Can't want to start the day. Comes up with great ideas and creative solutions over the weekend. Excited to get back to work on Monday.

EMPLOYEE: Has to get permission to do anything outside their assigned role. Risks punishment or rebuke if they do something bold.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Doesn't need permission from anyone to do anything. Might double growth by doing something bold. If it doesn't work, no sweat.

EMPLOYEE: Builds a sweet nest egg they live off and enjoy when they turn 65... If they're lucky.
SELF-EMPLOYED: Builds a sweet nest egg they can live off and enjoy... whenever they have enough cash that they choose to retire!

There must be a million more of these. Going to keep coming back to add more later. This thread might be my masterpiece...
