Pep instantly targeted pieces for the English core, Stones was supposed to work out better but still a success, albeit slightly overpriced. Mahrez only bust here.

we can do this slightly more:
Arsenal: Holding, Tierney if he counts, Chambers, Cedric, Mkhitaryan, Coq, Cech, Welbeck, Luiz. Most of these were 5 years ago. Only Tierney can count as a success here.

obviously you shouldn't sign PL garbage for the sake of it but if you want to win in the PL, you need a carefully built PL core. PL players are expensive but there's a very good reason for that, they are just a lot better than the rest 80% of the time.
Zaha, Bamford, couple of English CBs, Lamptey, Grealish, DCL, Barnes, McGinn etc are absolutely worth it even if you pay over the top for them. Very little bust chance and a massive upside. You usually have to fill the core positions (CB, DM, #9, LW/RW) with prem proven players
