Dhi Yazan, the eldest son of #SultanHaitham is officially the Crown Prince of #Oman. Investors long asked Oman to institute a stable succession system, but it was considered risky to upset the balance within the royal family. Not any more apparently. Some thoughts 1/
Dhi Yazan was born in 1990. He joined #Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013, and has served at the Omani Embassy in #London since 2018. In the #UK Dhi Yazan was plugged into the decades-old network of individuals and officials at the heart of UK-Oman relations. 2/
As his father was enthroned in January 2020, Dhi Yazan quickly returned to Muscat and started attending key diplomatic functions. In the August 2020 reshuffle, Dhi Yazan was appointed Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth. 3/ #Oman #DhiYazan #SultanHaitham
The appointment as Culture/Sports/Youth Minister not only secured Dhi Yazan a seat in the Council of Ministers but also allowed him to build a direct connection with the Omani youth, the key constituency for #Oman’s future. 4/ #DhiYazan
Back in Feb 2020, when I was in #Oman (sigh!) Dhi Yazan’s figure was already being discussed with enthusiasm in youth circles as younger Omanis look forward to being represented by younger royals who they can better relate to. 5/ #DhiYazan
But don't believe Dhi Yazan is only doing the "youth stuff". He is involved in the hotpots of Omani politics. Notably, he was occupying the 1st row among #Oman’s notables who attended #SultanHaitham’s first open meeting with #Dhofar-i representatives on 15 September 2020. 6/
In typical #Oman-i fashion, #SultanHaitham will have created a new balance within the royal family. Curious to watch how he channelled the ambitions of his brother Assad bin Tariq, who was a potential successor to #SultanQaboos. END #DhiYazan 7/7
I said Crown Prince to simplify but as @ElanaGulf says it’s technically Heir: https://twitter.com/elanagulf/status/1349002147539673097
Interesting point from @alyazeeditalal that hereditary succession is very unorthodox in the Ibadi tradition, the state religion in #Oman https://twitter.com/alyazeeditalal/status/1349026636906246148
This by @saidsaif is a key point on contemporary Ibadism in #Oman https://twitter.com/saidsaif/status/1349062403800125445
