You work in a #hospital with many complex patients & families desperate about their loved ones. You’re exhausted, juggling work & home life. Is it any wonder clinicians #burnout? Today, we report the outcome of our studies on burnout & #distress among @PMunkCardiacCtr clinicians.
Using the @well_beingindex developed by @MayoClinic, we surveyed nurses, physicians & allied health staff to measure #burnout & #distress levels in each clinical group.

#Burnout is characterized by emotional exhaustion, a sense of reduced accomplishment & depersonalization. The clinically relevant dimensions of #distress include burnout as well as meaning in work, severe fatigue, work-life integration, quality of life & suicidal ideation.
I have been a doctor for 35 years & have seen how #burnout can harm clinicians & the patients we care for. There is little doubt the unprecedented home & work-related stress associated with #COVID19 have increased levels of clinician #burnout and #distress.
Clinician #burnout correlates with an increased risk of #MedicalErrors, serious #PatientSafety events & reduced patient satisfaction. It is also associated with decreased clinician quality of life, high fatigue, job turnover & thoughts about suicide.
In our studies, carried out prior to the pandemic, 78% of nurses, 73% of allied health staff & 65% of physicians described #burnout in the last month, while 79% of nurses, 56% of allied health staff & 55% of physicians had high levels of distress.
To provide outstanding care, clinicians need to be healthy, both physically & mentally. Our next steps will be to meet with MDs, nurses & allied health staff, so that we can understand the key drivers of #burnout & develop intervention strategies to decrease #burnout & #distress.
It's critical we address the impact of #burnout in #healthcare & work together towards bringing about much-needed change. Healthcare workers give their all to care for others; it's time they're cared for too. @UHN @OntariosDoctors @Royal_College @theNAMedicine @ONgov @ONThealth
