Ahead of Pompeo's remarks, here are some thoughts regarding the longstanding cooperation between the IRI and al-Qaeda: 1. The Khamenei-led regime has systematically dismissed accusations of assistance to al-Qaeda. It's not the first time that Khamenei personally lies. https://twitter.com/JasonMBrodsky/status/1348959030513987585
2. Tehran has given top al-Qaeda terrorists and their families safe haven since the 9/11 attacks, enabling them to initiate terror attacks against KSA (Riyadh, 1995) and the U.S. (Kenya and Tanzania bombings,1998).
3. The next milestone in Tehran-AQ relations was the Iraq War (2003-11): As part of its drive to expell the U.S. from Iraq through proxies war, Tehran supported al-Qaeda Iraq, alongside its support to another Sunni group Ansar al-Islam and the Iran-led transnational Shiite array.
4. As part of its policy in Afghanistan, Tehran boosted AQ capabilities mainly in Kabul (but not only). This cooperation was resulted in fatal attacks of the "Kabul Network."
5. As part of the deal between the two parties, al-Qaeda has never been involved in terror attacks against the Iranian soil.
6. Yet, al-Qaeda carried out some attacks against the IRI in order to gain some leverages over it (see the text below of @thomasjoscelyn)
